Our Toxic City

Margaret Motheral’s story is a shocking example of the environmental injustices and crimes committed by local, state, and federal governments every single day. It’s the classic case of profits over people. This nefarious, vampire-like system is damaging so many people in so many ways… It’s time to fight back!

Margaret and I met at the La Columbe coffee shop directly across from Occupy Philadelphia. I apologize for the background noise during the first 10 minutes or so, but it gets better as the interview progresses. Click here for more information about Margaret’s story.

Nuclear Folly: An Urgent Warning

Recently it was revealed that over 17 tons of weapons-grade nuclear material has gone missing. Have you heard of this? Probably not, because this terrifying story was buried under mountains of post-10th anniversary of 9/11 navel gazing and other trivial nonsense. After this story broke, I remained in a sort of low level shock. I, like so many of us, am accustomed to reading about unfortunate things in the news, but this was beyond the pale even for me. As the days passed I (naively) kept expecting the mainstream media to pick up this story and sound the alarms, especially considering the very recent 9/11 anniversary hype and the potential risk for terrorism associated with such a large amount of missing weapons ready plutonium and uranium. But no, as the week progressed, the media instead chose to spend its time picking apart the lunatic ravings of Rick Perry and the other crazies at the Republican presidential candidate Tea Party debate, a debate hosted by CNN for some strange reason.

Looking back, perhaps it’s eerily ironic that the story regarding this missing nuclear weapons material broke while attention was focused on the potential next president of the United States/future Horseman of the Apocalypse. The foreign policies of a Rick Perry, Herman Cain or even a Mitt Romney would almost certainly very quickly lead us down the path to WWIII given the volatile and precarious state of the world. Dwindling oil supplies, exploding populations, economic crisis, and increased militarism could very easily spark off a global war. As I have already partially alluded to, terrorists armed with even a fraction of this missing 17 tons of nuclear material could potentially cause enough damage to provoke a disastrous response from a powerful state (consider the United States’ overreaction to 9/11).

The point I’m trying to drive home is that we should not be complacent about the threat of nuclear war simply because the Cold War is over. Threats persist, and we know why these threats persist. If we the people, the inhabitants of this earth, put our fate into the hands of power hungry, short sighted career politicians and mentally ill ideologues, then we might as well go and jump off a tall building right now because all hope is lost. Capitalism and the industrial military complex are cancers, insatiable black holes; they will destroy everything if left to their own devices. If we want to avoid a nightmarish future, if we want our children and loved ones and family members to have a chance at a peaceful life free from the threat of total annihilation, we must say an emphatic “NO!” to wars of aggression even if we happen to receive some blow back from our country’s murderous foreign polices in the form of terrorism.

The movie below is a glimpse into a possible future, one we must avoid at all costs. ‘Threads’ is presented in a chillingly realistic ‘mockumentary’ style, and be warned, it is not for the faint of heart. Although it was released in 1984 at the height of the Cold War, it’s a timeless reminder of the need to hold our so called leaders to account and remain ever vigilant lest we risk our own annihilation at the hands of their folly. Ironically, the nuclear war that erupts in this fictional tale is sparked off by a conflict originating in Iran, a conflict initiated by the military aggression of the United States…

HIV/AIDS: Knowledge Is Power

If knowledge is power, then it only follows that a lack of knowledge, or a lack of access to knowledge, will result in powerlessness. Ignorance still keeps HIV/AIDS an extremely taboo topic of conversation, but today with the help of two very knowledgeable people we shed some light on this hush hush subject.

Val Sowell (Part I) is the Programming and Training Coordinator for Philadelphia’s largest HIV/AIDS education and treatment organization, Philadelphia FIGHT. We discussed the role of media in public perceptions, the role of poverty, conspiracy theories, treatment options, statistics and much more.

Tommy Atz (Part II) is the HIV/STD Testing Coordinator for SafeGuards, an organization focusing primarily on the health concerns of the L/G/B/T population here in Philadelphia. We had a very frank and honest conversation about the unique challenges facing the gay population.
